Surf

Whangamata is renowned for its consistent beach breaks and the famous Bar, a world-class rivermouth sandbar that lights up during solid swells. The surf school offers group and private lessons for all levels, with the popular "Surf Lesson + Free Hire" deal providing excellent value. Access the complete hire fleet including surfboards, wetsuits, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks. Water temperatures range from a refreshing 13°C in winter to 22°C in summer, so wetsuits are provided for all sessions. The best swells arrive during the winter months from May to September, though waves can be found year-round.
